Feed Your Soul

Michelle MacFadyen - Sunday, December 12, 2010
Submitted by Michelle Lafleur MacFadyen
J.P. and I attended the "Music Voyager - Made in Louisiana" Release Party at the AcA last night.  The evening started out with live performances by: Louis & Andre Michot, Roddie Romero & Eric Adcock, and David Egan & Marc Broussard. These guys poured out their hearts on stage -  I could feel the connection deep in my soul. It's still resonating within me. Like when Louis Michot sings, I think I can hear the cry of his ancestors coming through his bones.  Of course, as a piano player, I was especially interested in hearing David Egan play. Talk about playing with soul! If you haven't heard David, he plays at Blue Dog for Sunday Brunch occasionally.

Lafayette is so blessed to have such down-to-earth talented musicians, where the "contours of the landscape shape the tonality & spirit of the music".  John O'Donohue can explain it better than I can.  He says about music:

There is a profound sense in which music
opens a secret door in time & reaches
in to the eternal.  This is the authority &
grace of music: it evokes or creates an
atmosphere where presence awakens to
its eternal depth.

During the planning stages of the bakery, JP & I came up with the Vision for our business:  Building community by feeding the body and soul with phenomenal bread.  When our customers walk in the shop, we want to touch their souls similar to how those guys touched us last night.  Above the kneading table, a sign hangs with the message: "All We Knead is Love".  The crew really does knead with love.  The goal is to treat that bread from the first scoop of flour until it's in our customers hands as a labor of Love.

Come get fed!

Political Clout

Michelle MacFadyen - Saturday, June 05, 2010

While we don't have a PAC or a Lobbyist in Baton Rouge, we do make sure to keep our State Senator, Mike Michot, happy!

The Cat in the Hat

Michelle MacFadyen - Friday, April 23, 2010

We don't know how she does it but Michelle manages to get our bread in the hands of the most amazing people!  Thankfully, Thing 1 and Thing 2 didn't destroy the kitchen.

Peter Reinhart

Michelle MacFadyen - Friday, March 19, 2010
J.P. and Michelle ran into this guy at the Great Harvest Owner's Convention a couple of weeks ago.

You might not recognize him but he is a rock star in our world.  His name is Peter Reinhart... if we were computer programmers he would be Steve Jobs and Bill Gates combined.  His passion for bread is infectious and his recipes are killer (for any of you home bakers out there).

The Man In Red

There's B-List celebrities, there's A-List celebrities, and then there's Uber-Celebrities.  Michelle met the Uber-Celebrity this week.  We think she's been naughty, which is why she's trying to bribe him with our Cranberry Orange Teacake!

Ali & AJ

Michelle MacFadyen - Friday, November 13, 2009

Ali & AJ (formerly 78 Violet) are in town for the filming of Secretariat and stopped by for our new sandwich, The Pilgrim.  For those of you keeping score, this is JP's first run-in with a celebrity.

Rockin' A Cobb with Sonny

Michelle MacFadyen - Friday, October 16, 2009

This is Sonny Landreth.  Not only can Sonny tear up a guitar but he can tear into a California Cobb.

In case you haven't heard of Sonny, here's what NPR says about him:
In the 1970s, Landreth played a stint with zydeco king Clifton Chenier and became an in-demand session player before pursuing his own solo recording and songwriting career, starting with 1995's Outward Bound. His style and technique each expand on conventional slide-guitar methods.

And from his Wikipedia page:
Eric Clapton has said he is "probably the most underestimated musician on the planet and also probably one of the most advanced, and it puts me to shame."

And, now, from his Great Harvest page:
Sonny Landreth's California Cobb --without bacon-- is the greatest thing on sliced Honey Whole Wheat.

The Family Vacation

Michelle MacFadyen - Wednesday, September 23, 2009
(submitted by Michelle)
Because of the awesome crew that we have, we were fortunate to enjoy some time in Colorado last month.  The first stop was the Lyons Folk Fest.  After being on the road for 18 hours, we arrived to meet our dear friends from the Springs for 3 days of awesome, close-up & personal music & tent camping.

The first conversation was about how we had just missed Peter Himmelman's set - we were truly bummed especially the kids since he writes awesome kid music (the kind that adults like, too).   Peter was conversing next to the car so I decided to approach him & tell him how sorry we were to have missed him on-stage.  "Peter, look at my license plate...we drove all the way from Louisiana to hear you play & I can't believe we just missed you!  I think we'll just have to turn around right now.  Kids, get back in the car...."  The kids had that zombie-like glazed look that was interpreted as..."We are so sad...." but was really "I don't want to see the car for 3 days!"

Peter's reply:  "Well, let's see what we can do...."  He took us backstage to the warm-up tent.  Man, we had no idea how close-up & personal!  The kids were in shock as seen on the video.  He played for 20 minutes, and at the end of our brief visit, Mr. Himmelman, the genius song-writer, made up 2 songs on the spot.  One about eating gator meat & one about Amanda and her 5 brothers (2 were actually friends but Peter didn't know that).

What a gift!   It was the start of an awesome vacation.  Thanks, Peter!

Successful Event at Pack & Paddle

Michelle MacFadyen - Wednesday, May 13, 2009
National Geographic author, adventurer and living legend, Jon Bowermaster, gave an inspiring slide presentation last week at Pack & Paddle.  He chronicled the adventures of his OCEANS 8 Project, a series of expeditions exploring the world's oceans from the seat of a kayak.  Pack & Paddle was raising money that night for the BasinKeeper Program which works tirelessly to protect the Atchafalaya Basin.
Great Harvest sponsored the event.

JP & Michelle are pictured here with Jon Bowermaster and Becky and John Williams, owners of Pack & Paddle.

"To Eat or Not To Eat, That is the Question"

Burton Raffel, world renowned translator of Old English literature (Beowulf, Canterbury Tales, Shakespeare), stops in for his weekly loaf of Dakota bread.  Jane is a big fan!  Read Mr. Raffel's Bio.
